Fluxbox Deskshots

So I finally emerged an alternate window manager next to kde. I chose fluxbox. I dig the popup menu and the overall light weight minimalistic feel of the 'alternate' window managers. The only thing that seemed to be clouding me about going ahead and installing one is the whole gtk2/qt division. I have quite a few kde apps ya know. I may just go fully loaded and have the 2 options. Gtk2 apps in fluxbox and qt apps for when I want to login to kde. Because from what I can make out, it seems everyone who uses these alt WMs use gtk2, with the exception of konqueror. (Which reminds me, I absolutely love konqueror, but I would rather be full out gtk2 in fluxbox - maybe give rox a try.)

Although KDE is insanely fast and responsive on my high end system, I honestly think it's a bit much. (Some ppl describe it as bloated, that's not the right term imo - it's just loaded.) I am still looking to make use of those newly split up KDE packages in portage though. Then atleast my menu would be a lot cleaner.

I'm totally satisfied with fluxbox atm though, I wanted to have a minimalistic STYLISH usable wm, and so far so good. It is very usable, I am just flying through my workload at the university.

KDE Split ebuilds

News for Gentoo KDE users: Split KDE ebuilds for 3.4.0_beta1 have been officially announced. The new 'split' ebuilds provide separate ebuilds for all the separate KDE applications. I for one can't stand some of the applications being forced on the user in some of those kde packages. Not only will these new packages decrease compilation time for a lot of us who don't need kde fluff like kids' "edutainment," but we also free up quite a bit of hard drive space. All in all, this is good news.

Check it out.

Need a laugh?

You can easily waste 3 or 4 hours browsing this one directory.

Found all those from two different sources after searching google for

"Index of /" -html word

where 'word' is pics/images/picx/etc. Use your imagination. Some people don't have a clue about directory permissions, others don't care. Either way you're sure to find something interesting.

Don't bet on them all being work safe...

Beep Media Player - Now Playing

Notice the "Now Playing" section on the side menu. It displays the song info for the currently playing song in my Beep Media Player. It relies on the BMP InfoPipe which provides a socket for the song information. A simple php script parses the information from the socket and updates the section on the site.

Gigabit Transfer Rates Over Powerlines?

Penn State engineers, Pouyan Amirshahi and Mohsen Kavehrad, estimated in a research paper released Wednesday that their system could deliver data at close to one gigabit per second over medium-voltage electrical lines in ideal conditions, with speeds of hundreds of megabits per second available to home users. Their system would uses repeaters placed every one kilometer, (0.62 miles) and requires power lines to have been modified to reduce interference with the data signals. The engineers said their estimates were based on computer models, and that the data speeds available in a real-world version would depend on how many repeaters a power company used.

20 Year Usenet Timeline on Google Groups

Google compiled a 20 Year Usenet Timeline, with some of the memorable articles and threads posted on Usenet since 1981. For example, read Tim Berners-Lee's announcement of what became the World Wide Web or Linus Torvalds' post about his "pet project".
